CrossFit Open Update!

So this past week was 14.3 for the Open.

Deadlifts and box jumps (or if you’re like me, step ups).

Well, for the longest time I couldn’t do deadlifts because I have these massive knots in my lower back that lock up early and keep me from working out. I started back doing deadlifts about two months ago and I can you this, honestly and straightforwardly, I missed them.

I missed being able to prove I am strong.

I missed being able to show I’ve changed.

And I missed that 1RM PR that I set several months ago.

Oh, that last one? I missed it because I went over it by 20lbs. I’m kind of really stinkin’ happy about that last one.

So long story short, I did this workout twice. Once on Thursday and once yesterday, Monday.

Thursday’s workout wasn’t bad. I had gone through the #95, #135, #155 deadlifts and step ups and had less than a minute left and was able to knock out two at #185 for a final score of 92 reps. I was expecting to be sore, tired, and bedridden all weekend, but amazingly, I wasn’t.

Come Monday, I knew I wanted to improve my score. I wanted to hit 100 reps. I was only 8 away, right? Well, after some planning and with the help of one of my box mates, we changed the plates around on the bar so that I’d never be wasting time taking a plate off, simply always adding weight.

By the time that round of #185 came around, I had just under 2 minutes left. Almost two whole minutes! In that time I was able to knockout 12 reps for a final score of 102. Not only had I beaten my goal for the workout, but I also got 12 reps of #185, a weight I hadn’t deadlifted ever before before Thursday.

I was pretty happy about that, even though now, as I’m sitting at my desk, my back would probably disagree with me.

But that’s besides the point. The point is is that I did it! I got stronger and I surpassed a personal goal and set a personal record. That’s the point of CrossFit, right?

Well, another point of CrossFit is to eat healthy and eat to perform. So I baked some salmon last night.

 

I’ll call this Stupid Easy Salmon.

I’m not going to lie, I bought the salmon at Costco already in this little pan. It came with these three humongous scoops of pesto butter on the top of each filet, something I immediately removed once I got home. After adding a tiny bit of olive oil to the filets, (they already came with salt, pepper, and a little fresh parsley), I popped them in the oven at 400* for about 35 minutes. (Sorry the picture [or pan for that matter] isn’t prettier, I was in a rush and only did a iPhone photo).

Salmon is such an excellent source of Omega-3s, protein, vitamins A, B, and D as well as calcium, iron, phosphorus and selenium. Salmon is also great for heart health, has excellent brain and nerve benefits and it can make your hair nice and shiny (you know, because you need to shine all the time).

Five on Friday!

My life has been so hectic this past week so I haven’t been able to post as much as I would have liked.

Anyway, today’s is my birthday so for my Five on Friday I thought I’d share some personal stuff about me 🙂

1. I tell people I’m from New Orleans/Metairie, but my heart is in Hopedale. You see, Hopedale is this little village (I don’t think it qualifies as a city) that’s below Chalmette, which is southeast of New Orleans. Anyway, the reason I say my heart is in Hopedale is because every weekend growing up I was there, fishing, playing on the boat and exploring bayous and marshes.

2. I’m incredibly impatient. Like, I have this nervous/weird tick that I inherited from my dad. When I’ve been waiting for some time, my foot will just start tapping. I can’t explain it. I do it at my desk, at the dinner table and even in traffic. I am always looking for a way out of a situation, whether its some awkward conversation with someone I haven’t seen in forever, or again, traffic. They’re not always negative situations or anything like that. Just planning ahead sometimes, anticipating certain things.

3. I’ve been cooking a LOT lately. I mean a lot a lot. I need to post some more recipes to here for y’all and update the recipes page. But anyone who knows me knows I love to cook. I mean love love love. I will randomly add different spices and ingredients to whatever I’m cooking, creating new tastes and flavors. Like these stuffed chicken breasts I made the other day (I call them baby chickens because they’re kind of little). One of my new favorite things to cook with are baby bellos (baby portobello mushrooms).

4. CrossFit has really given me some of the greatest friends I could ever ask for. I mean, if you can get all gross, sweaty and writhe on the floor in pain together before going to grab dinner and drinks in those same clothes you were just working out in, it has to be a true friendship, right? Duh. Of course it is.

5. So these friends of mine that I’ve made through CrossFit. Well, a bunch of us are all celebrating St. Patrick’s Day on Saturday here in Baton Rouge. For those who don’t know, this holiday in Baton Rouge is the equivalent to Mardi Gras Day in New Orleans. It’s legit and it’s crazy. Well, being the person I am and historically doing absolutely nothing fun for my birthday (well, there was that one time freshman year in Boulder when my then-boyfriend was working and I ‘went out’ with some ‘friends’ who ended up drinking too much, so I left and then they all got MIPs walking home), with the exception of work, because you know, work can be fun. Sometimes. So long story short, that St. Patrick’s Day parade and celebration? Yeah, I’m treating that like my own birthday party and everyone else is celebrating with me. Oh, and there will be mimosas.

Five on Friday!

What a crazy busy week. How about a little Five on Friday?!

1. Last night was 14.2, the second workout of the 2014 CrossFit Open. 3 minutes to complete two rounds of 10 OHS #65 and 10 C2B pullups. Well, I had never done a #65 OHS but guess what, I did! And then came the part that I was terrified of. C2B pull-ups. Before yesterday, I hadn’t ever done an unassisted pull-up, let alone a chest to bar pull-up. Well, I didn’t get any C2B, but I hit a personal PR on unassisted pull-ups! I was happy with those results even though I didn’t get any C2Bs.

More importantly, I was so excited that I FINALLY got to participate in the party at Red Stick Crossfit for the WOD! I finally got to go and hangout with my CrossFit family for The Open. The Open WOD was finally capped off with a group of us going out for dinner afterwards. It’s crazy how the people I workout with at Red Stick CrossFit have become my second family.

2. I’d like to say that Mardi Gras 2014 was a success. I had a phenomenal time photographing the parades and just love the history and tradition that is Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Oh, and king cake. Who doesn’t love king cake.

3. Along with some fantastic images from Mardi Gras, I love the little things I pick up from sporting events. I absolutely LOVE shooting baseball and football. It’s two of the sports that I absolutely love to shoot. The raw emotion that emulates from the images is just, how can I put it, well, there are no words.

4. So when I’m not at the box and when I’m not working, taking pictures, and blogging, I’m cooking and juicing. I’ve been making some pretty epic juices lately. Last night’s was a green juice (I’m not going to lie, they’ve all become green juices). The juice was comprised of a bunch of kale, three cucumbers, a box of strawberries, two oranges and an apple. Before adding the cucumbers and apple to the juice, I mixed it up a little and peeled them (along with the oranges). I don’t know why I wanted to try it, but being that I’ve seen a lot of the rind and peel get stuck in the blades and not even make it to the juicer, I guess it was worth a shot. Well, it worked beautifully. I need to update my recipes for y’all.

5. So Wednesday I started watching House of Cards. I’m addicted. I think I need an intervention. The first sign to solving an addiction is to admit you have one, right? Well, yeah. I’m obsessed. If you haven’t started watching this show, and if you’re not already addicted, you need to get on the bandwagon. Like now.

Happy Lundi Gras y’all!

I’m sitting here, Lundi Gras day, watching Magic Mike and munching on a lil piece of king cake (because why not and it’s Mardi Gras, duh) and I couldn’t help but notice that I hadn’t updated y’all on my first CrossFit Open experience.

For those who don’t know, 14.1 was a 10 min AMRAP of 30 DUs and 15 snatches #55.

I was terrified. I had never gotten DUs before.

Actually, I think I got one once. On accident.

Well, I went in on Friday and was going to do it. I wasn’t going to tell myself no.

I  wasn’t going to give in. And I sure as hell wasn’t going to give up.

So I watched my boxmates do their set. And then I thought to myself, why am I not getting a DU?

Well it turns out it wasn’t me. It was my rope.

I traded my RX rope in for a friends’ simple Rogue rope and I was getting them I developed a pattern and was finally getting double unders!

I was so excited.

Well, now that I had figured out how to get them, and had finished 14.1 at least once, I wanted to try it again. Unfortunately, I couldn’t.

Silly Mardi Gras threw me off my groove and I wasn’t able to take another chance and the workout.

Oh well. That doesn’t mean I can’t try it again on my own, right?
